Heather Tierney is a business owner with places in Los Angeles and New York. She first came to the city after college and started work in the editorial section of Time Out New York, a magazine she adored. Through this position, she did many reviews of different restaurants and bars, specifically the small ones left from the pick-over pile from other editors.
Four years later, she found herself with the title “Head Food Writer”. It was under this direction that she truly learned the landscape of the city’s food and beverage scene and came across the so-called magical little place in China Town: Doyers Street.
After four more years of meeting with Chinatown brokers, she finally landed a spot in her dream location, perfect for her vision of a speakeasy cocktail bar. With the rent being cheap and the New Yorkers always wanting to find that hidden gem, the cocktail bar was booming and just two years later, she opened a Mexican restaurant next door named Pulqueria. After a few years of running these businesses, Tierney still wanted something more and thus, The Butcher’s Daughter was born.
Tierney told Coveteur magazine that she wanted to “create almost like a Parisian café, but the vegetarian version. Healthy, but has that feeling like you almost want to light a cigarette out there.” She then came up with the name “The Butcher’s Daughter” because it was like the daughter was rebelling against her father, making a vegetarian butcher shop.
Being a designer in the food industry, Tierney not only provided the food and beverages people desire, but also the communal and aesthetic atmosphere, which is part of the reason her businesses have been so successful.
Now living in Venice, she has learned to appreciate the work-life-home balance while breathing in her success along the sandy beaches.
